Across Wychwood we have a portfolio of products that span many disciplines, all of them using their own naming conventions for rod capability.
Predator rods often refer to casting weight, as lure are graded by size and their actual weight, and in deadbait fishing the size and weigh t of the bait fish being used determines the choice of rod. Casting weights are a general guide; try not to overload a rod because not only with it underperform, but you risk damaging the rod, which will not be covered under the terms of the product warranty.
In carp fishing, test curves are used; a test curve is the amount of weight that is required to bend the rod through 90-degrees. You'll see these written in imperial measures (i.e. 3.25lb). This is not a measure of how much a rod can lift, but more a guide to the power of the blank so you can suit the rod to the type of fishing you're intending to use i for. The general rule of thumb is a higher test curves, the more ability for the rod to cast further.
Line weights are exclusive to fly rods; this is the optimised line weight that the rod is intended for use with so you can load it up correctly and cast efficiently. Overloading a rod with a line that's outside of the guide size means you may not get an accurate cast or one that lands correctly; likewise, if you use a line that's too light for the road, the rod won't compress and your casting will be comprimised.
