The stunning range of Wychwood Truefly FA and Truefly MF fly rods represents a significant leap forward in performance and design, utilising the latest multi-layer carbon technologies.

There are 12 rods in the range — 6 FA models and 6 MF models — but what do they mean, and which rod is best suited to each situation?

Truefly MF (Medium Flex)

The Truefly MF is constructed from a 24/30T carbon blank and features a middle-to-tip action, flexing from the middle of the blank toward the tip.

This forgiving action makes the rods easy to cast, offering excellent feel throughout the blank and allowing plenty of time to load the rod properly. This makes the MF an ideal rod for beginners learning to cast, and it is also the rod of choice for many casting instructors.

However, the MF is far more than just a beginner’s rod. It’s a valuable tool for experienced fly anglers as well. These rods excel at short to medium range fishing, where their forgiving action acts like a shock absorber, helping to reduce smashed takes on light tippets and minimise hook pulls.

The MF is particularly well suited to dry flies and nymphs on floating and tip lines. It will also handle small lures on intermediate lines on small stillwaters, where long-distance casting or very deep fishing is not generally required. Overall, it performs best as a top-of-the-water rod.

The action on this rod is lighter than many others on the market and may suit anglers who experience shoulder discomfort when casting faster action rods. However, as always, we recommend trying the rod first where possible if purchasing for this reason.

Why choose a Truefly MF:

  • A first rod when learning to cast
  • A dedicated dry fly and nymph rod
  • An all-round rod for small stillwaters
  • Ideal for anglers who experience casting limitations with faster rods

Truefly FA (Fast Action)

The Truefly FA is constructed from a 30T carbon blank and features a fast action, flexing mainly in the top third of the rod toward the tip.

The fast action makes the Truefly FA an excellent casting rod capable of achieving serious distance when required. However, it can be more difficult for beginners to master, as it is less forgiving than middle-to-tip action rods. For this reason, it is generally better suited to more experienced fly anglers.

For skilled casters, the main benefit of the FA is its versatility. The rod is fast and powerful enough to cast shooting lines and heavy weighted flies, while still retaining enough feel for dry fly and nymph work.

In larger line weights, these rods are perfect for distance casting from the bank as well as boat fishing. They handle everything from fast-sinking lines to floating lines, perform well on windy days, and help land bigger fish more quickly.

All of this makes the Truefly FA the ideal all-round rod for the modern stillwater angler.

Why choose a Truefly FA:

  • An all-round rod that can do everything
  • A distance rod for bank fishing
  • A great boat rod
  • Suitable for floating and sinking lines and larger flies
  • Ideal for bigger fish and windy venues
